Yeeying Liu was the third son from a middle class family from Anhui, China. Because he had two older brothers, he was considered dispensable and was given to a widow and maiden aunt for adoption to continue their name. He was one of the first to be sent to the newly opened government schools and later obtained three scholarships to the University of Edinburgh. He stayed in Scotland for 10 years where he met his wife Mae Brown Brooks.
